A native of El Paso, Texas, Dr. Virginia Morales is a freelance hornist and music educator in the Boston area. She has performed with professional orchestras in the United States, Mexico, and Japan. Prior to moving to Boston, she was a hornist with the Juárez Symphony Orchestra in Ciudad Juárez Chihuahua, Mexico as well as a member of the El Paso Wind Symphony. Dr. Morales has also performed as a substitute horn player with orchestras in the New England area such as the Cape Symphony in Cape Cod, MA, New Bedford Symphony, Symphony of Indian Hill, and orchestras in the southwest such as the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, and the Roswell Symphony Orchestra in Roswell, New Mexico. In addition, Virginia is also a member of the Boston Chamber Orchestra.
Dr. Morales began her career as a soloist at the age of 17, performing Mozart’s Horn Concerto in D Major with her high school orchestra in concerts in both Texas and California. She has also given both solo and chamber recitals in the Boston area and in Texas. In addition to her solo and orchestral efforts, Dr. Morales has recorded on various film and video game scores from Japan, China, and Taiwan.
After having graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s of Music from The University of Texas at El Paso, Dr. Morales spent two years as a music educator in the El Paso Independent School District. She has also given lessons to young horn players both in Texas and Massachusetts and considers her efforts in music education to be as important as her career on stage. Dr. Morales moved to Boston to continue her education, and received her Master of Music degree in 2013 from Boston University. In the spring of 2014, she was awarded a scholarship from the Boston University Women’s Council, an organization which provides funding to select women pursuing graduate degrees at BU. Dr. Morales earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in the Spring of 2016 from BU studying under soloist, Eric Ruske. Additional teachers include Richard Lambrecht of the El Paso Symphony, and Michael Winter of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Morales’ current activities include private teaching and freelancing as a horn player in the greater Boston Metropolitan area. In addition, Dr. Morales also serves as the Director of Instrumental music at The Fenn School in Concord, MA. In the summer of 2015, she joined the Boston Chamber Orchestra for their seven concert tour in Japan. This summer, she joins Boston University Tanglewood Institute faculty once again as Assistant Horn Instructor for the Horn workshop. Virginia also joins the Inaugural Season of the Newport Contemporary Music Series.
